What do Depop's own pages say about the age to sell?
Four pages cover it, and they do not quite agree. All four sit in the English (UK) edition of Depop's Help Centre, which is the edition we read.
| Where | What it says | Page last updated |
|---|---|---|
| Terms of Service, section 4, "Who can set up an account with us?" | "Anyone aged 13 or over can use Depop." | Terms take effect October 6, 2026 |
| Why does Depop need my date of birth? | Depop checks that everyone signing up is "at least 13 years old", "the minimum required age to buy and sell on Depop." | June 17, 2026 |
| How old do I have to be to use Depop? | "You have to be aged 13 or older to sign up to Depop & you must be over 18 to use PayPal and Depop Payments." | May 27, 2025 |
| How do I get paid? - US | "If you're under 18, you'll need a parent or guardian to verify their details on your behalf to sell and get paid." | September 2, 2026 |
Read the last two rows side by side. The older page says you must be over 18 to use Depop Payments. The newer one, more than a year later, says an under-18 seller needs a parent or guardian to verify their details. We lead with the newer page because it is the one written for US sellers. Either way, 13 is the sign-up age, and payment is where anyone under 18 needs an adult.
One catch from the Terms: if your country sets an older age for consenting to data processing, that older age applies.
Can you sell on Depop under 18, at 16 or at 17?
Depop's newest US page says yes, with a parent or guardian handling the payment side. We found no separate rule for 16 or 17. It is 13 to sign up, and under 18 means an adult is involved.
Two other pages explain why the adult matters. The date-of-birth page says that for anyone over 13 and under 18, its payment partners "PayPal and Stripe may have additional requirements and you may need a parent or guardian to help you when setting up a payment method."
The Tips for parents and guardians page (June 30, 2026) goes further. For selling or buying through Depop Payments, Depop asks under-18s "to talk to their parent or guardian as they may be required to provide further identification such as photographic ID and taxpayer information".
How do you get paid on Depop if you're under 18?
In the US, a parent or guardian verifies their details for you, as the payout page puts it. Before anyone agrees to that, it helps to know what the adult is signing up for.
What the parent takes on
The parents page speaks straight to the adult. If you let your child use your PayPal account, payment card, ID or SSN, "the account holder" is "responsible for any transaction dispute outcomes and may be required to include any income in your tax returns." Depop gives no figures, and neither do we. For the tax side, start at the IRS Gig economy tax center.
Where a parent's PayPal comes in
Depop mentions a parent's PayPal account in several places, so it is easy to assume that is the route. The Terms, section 8, say "PayPal can only be used to make or receive payment on Depop outside of the United Kingdom, United States and Australia." The same clause says an under-18 using a parent's PayPal account needs "express permission" each time. The parents page draws the same line: to use PayPal "outside the UK, AU and US," "anyone who is under 18 will need to use the PayPal account of someone aged 18 or over."
Put those next to the US payout line and you get our reading: in the US, the route Depop describes is the parent verifying their details, not lending a PayPal log-in. No single Depop sentence says that. We joined its pages to get there, and this is not legal advice.
What does Depop ask sellers aged 13 to 17 to do differently?
Its Tips for young people page (September 12, 2025) is a short list:
- Stay in the app. Keep buying, selling and chatting there. Depop says it can't help if you move to another platform and things go wrong.
- Never meet a buyer. The page says "Never meet someone from Depop in person, for any reason."
- Keep details private. No phone number, address or email address.
- Use the Buy button. Depop can protect you through its payment system, not if you pay another way.
- Set up two-factor authentication. Depop recommends it.
There is one listing rule too. Under the Nudity Policy (May 13, 2025), users or models aged 13 to 17 can't share photos of themselves in swimwear and a few other kinds of clothing. If you list clothes, read it before you shoot.
Does Depop check your age, and can you change it?
Depop asks for your date of birth when you sign up, and again when you sign up to Depop Payments. It uses that date "to confirm you're old enough to use Depop," according to the date-of-birth page. We found no other age check described, so we won't guess at one.
If you entered the wrong date by mistake, contact support. The same page says "We will ask you to provide a form of ID to verify your date of birth and amend it for you." The Terms also say "You must provide us with accurate and complete information." That honest route is the only one we can point you to.
How does Depop's rule compare with eBay's and Mercari's?
Depop lets in the youngest sellers of the three, and each app words its parent route differently.
| Depop | eBay | Mercari | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest age to sign up | 13 | 18 | 18, or the age of majority in your state; under 13 not permitted |
| Ages 13 to 17 | Your own account; in the US a parent or guardian verifies their details to get you paid | No tier written | Only through an account owned by and registered in the name of a parent or guardian |
| Source | Terms and payout page | Underage user policy | Minors page |
eBay's side, in its own words, is in our post on how old you have to be to sell on eBay. We left Poshmark out because we have not read its rule.
What can a teenager do now to get ready to sell on Depop?
Most of reselling happens before anything is listed, and that half needs no account.
- Find it. Learn which items are worth picking up and which to leave on the shelf.
- Photograph it. Plain light, every angle, every flaw.
- Price it. Look at what similar items sold for, not what people are asking.
- Pack it. A bag or box that fits, and tape on every seam.
You can practise that whole loop in Flip Life: Reseller Simulator. You start with $300 and a garage, source stock at thrift stores, yard sales and estate sales, photograph and list your finds, take offers and ship the orders. It is family-friendly, with no gore and no swearing, for Mac and Windows. The Flip Life FAQ has more, and the Flip Life blog has more tips.
Today, pick one thing from your own shelves, photograph it from every angle, and look up what similar ones sold for. Then show a parent or guardian and decide together whether, and when, to open the real account.
